Chester Zoo is an award winning zoological garden
in Cheshire
in the United Kingdom
and was founded by George S. Mottershead and family. It opened in June 1931 and became a non profit making society in June 1934. It is an extremely popular attraction for the whole of the North West of England. It is the largest zoological garden in the UK.
It was the first zoo in the UK to successfully breed elephant
s in captivity. The most famous of these was "Jubilee" (1977-2003), so named as he was born in 1977, the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee
. The newest arrivals are Tunga and Sundara, two baby elephants. More are expected to arrive soon, as the population of wild African Elephants
have tripled in the last 6 months.
One of the most famous sights in the zoo is the chimpanzee
s. Some have lived there for over 30 years, and it is a well-established colony.
The zoo has a monorail
transportation system, restaurants, children's playing park, picnic lawns and educational notices for visitors.
Conservation work is part of the zoo's strategy to help animals that are endangered in the wild. It also has sponsorship schemes for members of the public to support the care and welfare of a chosen creature.
There are many exhibits of animals that Chester Zoo is conserving. These include Tsavo (black rhino
), Bears of the Cloud Forest (spectacled bear
), Spirit of the Jaguar (jaguar
), Islands in Danger (komodo dragon
), miniature monkeys (marmosets
), and the Twilight Zone (fruit bat
).
A very new exhibit is elephants of the asian forest which contains Asian Elephants
, Northern Treeshrew
,Elongated Tortoise
,and great Hornbill
. Realm of the Red Ape opens in Spring 2007.

Cheshire
A brand new edition of this successful colour atlas of Cheshire, giving the most comprehensive and detailed coverage of the region. No other atlas names every street in Cheshire. The mapping is produced by Ordnance Survey to our specification and gives the user complete coverage of all urban and rural areas. The mapping is at a standard scale of 3 1/2 inches to 1 mile (2 2/3 inches to 1 mile in the pocket edition) with Chester shown at 7 inches to 1 mile, and is complete with postcode boundaries. The atlas is ideally suited for both business and leisure use. There is a route-planning map and an administrative and postcode map at the front of the atlas. The main maps show every named road, street and lane clearly with through-routes highlighted. School locations are marked and emergency services, hospitals, police stations, car parks and rail and bus station locations are all featured. There is a comprehensive index of street names and postcodes that includes schools, industrial estates, hospitals, sports centres, etc, which are highlighted in colour. The atlas is part of a series providing full coverage of England and Wales as well as much of Scotland.
