The Bowes Railway built by Robert Stephenson is the worlds only preserved operational standard gauge rope-hauled railway system in the world.

The railway was built to transport coal from Durham pits to boats on the River Tyne . Only part of the system remains now.

The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument .
