Twycross Zoo (The World Primate Centre) is a

, founded in 1963. It is notable for having the largest primate collection in the world, including breeding populations of
bonobo
s (the UK's only collection of our closest living relatives),
chimpanzee
s,
gorilla
s,
orang utan
s,
penguin
s,
camel
s, and
otter
s along with large numbers of monkey and lemur species.
The zoo also holds collections of many other animals - many on the endangered lists. There are elephants, big cats, sealions, birds, wildfowl, etc. Twycross Zoo is currently undergoing many exciting developments - a new Tropical House has recently been opened (allowing visitors to walk into the exhibit amongst the animals), the modern elephant enclosure is being developed further and a new bird aviary and wildfowl exhibition are now nearing completion (Summer 06).
The zoo welcomes nearly 500,000 visitors a year and plays an active part in education and conservation on a local, national and international scale. The Zoo is open every day, except Christmas Day.
