Lancashire County Cricket Club is an English
first-class cricket
club based at Old Trafford
, Manchester
. Typically, one match each year is played at Liverpool
and Blackpool
.
History
Early years
Lancashire County Cricket Club was formed in 1864 at a meeting of thirteen Lancashire Cricket Clubs. The County played its first County Cricket match, against Middlesex, at Old Trafford which had been the ground of the Manchester Cricket Club since 1857.
One-day crowns
After finding success elusive in the County Championship
since the Second World War
, despite producing players of the quality of Brian Statham
, Fred Trueman
's long time opening partner for England, and legendary opener Cyril Washbrook
, Lancashire took the opportunity to dominate the new world of one-day cricket in the 1970s
. Making full use of overseas stars such as Farokh Engineer
and the West Indian batsman Clive Lloyd
, captain Jackie Bond won a succession of one-day crowns in the company of David Lloyd
, Barry Wood
, Frank Hayes
and 'Flat Jack' Simmons.
Impish middle order batsman Neil Fairbrother
, Pakistani Wasim Akram
, and seamers such as Paul Allott
and Peter Martin
continued to bring success Lancashire's way, while long-time England captain Mike Atherton
has been replaced as Lancashire's biggest contemporary star with the emergence of Andrew Flintoff
.
Hopes and fears

Lancashire CCC - main entrance
Lancashire's failure to win the County Championship outright since the war still rankles with their passionate supporters; however, Lancashire remain among the favourites for any one-day competition, and the leagues of the 'Red Rose' county continue to be a fertile breeding ground for young talent in the game.
Staying at home!
Following a long period of discussions and rumours it has finally been decided that Lancashire will remain at Old Trafford[ * ]
. Options on sites in East Manchester and Wigan
were considered [ * ]
, but no comparative proposals were put to members.
The need for an improved ground was highlighted when Old Trafford surprisingly lost out to Cardiff
as a venue for the 2009 Ashes, much to the disappointment of cricket fans in the region [ * ]
. A financial plan
is awaited for the redevelopment, costed at £30m[ * ]
.
